Adam vs. Jesus

general thoughts

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(Romans 5:15-21 ESV)

Five contrasts between Adam and Christ
1. Many died through Adam’s sin, but much more have the grace of God and the free gift by grace through Jesus.
2. Adam’s trespass brought judgment, but the free gift through Jesus brought justification.
3. Death reigned through Adam, but many reign in life through Jesus.
4. Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but Jesus’ act of righteousness leads to justification and life.
5. By Adam’s sin many were made sinners, but by Jesus’ obedience many are made righteous.

There is fullness of life and freedom and hope in Christ. In Christ we have grace, justification, life, and righteousness. This is cause to praise God and give Him glory. This is cause to fight against sin. This is cause to boldly go and proclaim the name of Jesus to the world.

Giving Thanks

general thoughts

On Sunday, Ed shared a message on “giving thanks” from Luke 17:11-19.

He focused on the one leper who was healed and gave thanks and the nine who were healed and walked away. It’s important for us to give thanks, always, for all things, even if it’s hard sometimes.

I was reminded of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 where Paul says to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances, because this is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus. Again, it’s hard for us to give thanks sometimes, in our flesh, but because it’s God’s will for us, and He works in us to will for his good pleasure, we are able to give thanks, even in the midst of diabetes, cancer, or hard economies. Thank God we are in process and can learn to give thanks, as he teaches and leads us. We humble ourselves to learn and acknowledge His goodness and sovereignty in giving thanks.

Ed’s application was simple = grow and learn to live in an attitude of giving thanks to God, always.

Psalm 3

Bible passages

It is a good practice to take the Psalm and read them back and pray through them. This is my brief prayer from Psalm 3:

“You oh Lord are a shield about me, my glory, the lifter of my head. I cry aloud to you and you answer me from your holy hill. You sustain me. I will not fear what or who comes against me.”

Ask, Seek, Knock

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, He shared the Lord’s prayer and gave some parables of what praying means. He told them, “ask, seek, knock.” This sermon is from Luke 11:1-13 on January 1, 2012. May we all grow in our prayer lives in 2012.

Running On Empty

There are two dangers we face: being spiritually empty or thinking we are spiritually full but in reality being spiritually empty. Jesus address these dangers in Matthew 12:43-45. This is the sermon I preached on December 11, 2011

Some ways to live church life

general thoughts

It may seem like these verses in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 are the ramblings on of Paul, but I see in them some connections centered on the theme, “how to live in church community” -

12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

respect the pastor, respect the elders, love them, let peace reign among you for their sakes

14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

discipline, correction, encouragement, help, patience, forgiveness, and doing good are all necessary parts of “loving one another” in the body

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit.

important role of the Spirit’s work in rejoicing, praying, giving thanks as a church

20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

important roles of preaching and personal reading and studying, this is similar to what John wrote in his letters

23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

the work of God in the body, to sanctify and bring peace and make holy – the return of the Lord is our hope and what the bride of Christ prays for and lives for

25 Brothers, pray for us. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

importance of prayer for the church and fellowship with them

27 I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.

the public reading and preaching of the Word “feeds the sheep”

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Sola Gratia!

Google and Amazon

general thoughts

Matt Perman has an excellent post about Google and Amazon taking the long-term view in their business structure and planning and implementation.  I found this helpful as I consider ministry and the church and the city we live in.  Short-term pressures will come and go and require us to navigate through them, but having the “long-term” view will keep us persevering and enduring.  You could say that Jesus had this view as He headed to the cross and what He would accomplish there and what He intended the disciples to do afterwards (think, “I will build my church” and “go out into all the world” and “I will be with you always”) – God Himself had this view even as sin entered the world, from the time He created, “to trample on the serpent’s neck”.  This is very encouraging.

Encourage One Another

Bible passages, general thoughts

1 Thessalonians 5:9-11   9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

The elders and I read through these verses and prayed for our church this past week.  These are positive and exciting and thankful verses to read and pray through for the church body!  We have salvation through Jesus and we will live with Him for eternity (which started “the hour I first believed”).  We can then take this good news and encourage and build up one another throughout the week as we pray and read and meet and fellowship.  What a wonderful picture of our lives in Christ as individuals and as a community!

I hope you are encouraged and built up today as you think about and apply all who Jesus is and what He has done in your life, as a believer.  If you are not a believer and follower, I pray you would consider the truth of His claims and receive Him as Lord and Savior.
